Russia was only reacting on the Georgian aggression against South Ossetia and Abkhazia independent breakaway republics, not vice versa. Georgians were brainwashed by their internal propaganda machine to believe that Russia was aggressor (see the link:

War in South Ossetia
On Thursday, August 7th 2008, when Putin was out of the country during the Olympic Games, Georgian armed forces entered into the breakaway region of South Ossetia to assert Georgian governance of the region - a de facto (yet largely unrecognized) independent republic that has support from neighboring Russia. Russia responded on August 8th by sending its own military into Georgia - not only into region of South Ossetia - but also into the nearby breakaway republic of Abkhazia and deeper into Georgia itself. Many Airstrikes and ground skirmishes have taken place since, with several parties calling for a cease-fire. Those paying the highest price for the war are the South Ossetian civilians, which may have suffered (depending on who is reporting) between 100 and 2,000 deaths.
It seems U.S. gave a green light to Georgia to provoke Russia so that Russians' attention would be diverted away from issues in Iran, while the US, UK, France, and Israel were amassing their presence for a strike against Iran. http://europebusines.blogspot.com/2008/08/massive-us-naval-armada-heads-for-iran.html
So Georgia was somehow looking for a fitting moment to pick a fight with Russia. As someone said it was a hysterically manipulated movement to see indirect Russian reaction, just before realizing the Iran game... Now everything is crystal clear, and hope that big irrational game won't start again.
By the way, if anybody wants a more objective look on world politics than the one offered by the major news outlets in USA, try the British BBC. They have a great audio podcast.
From comments of the people:
"Everybody who thinks Russia started this war, should know: you are wrong. It's a definitely disinformation and provocation. You should think about what you watch, listen or read. You should understand some of the elite bribes many channels of mass media. Washington, not Moscow, is guilty of the war. Georgia is nothing, when it's alone. NATO is shit. Note this. Remember this." "Would this have happened if Georgia wasn't pro-US and was not provoking the 'big Russian bear'? Would this have happened if Georgia wasn't trying to get admitted to NATO? Are Russian hands clean? No. Is Georgia a democracy? No. Georgia's "Rose Revolution" was bought by Rothschild money, so-called "non-governmental organizations" (NGO) and the US-Israeli governments. Any and all light mortar "provocations" from ill-equipped Ossetian militia upon Georgian positions do not justify Georgia's heavy weapon, night-time artillery barrage and air attacks upon the civilians of the small town of Tskhinvali, which resulted in the deaths of 1,400 civilians. Georgia, backed by the U.S. and Israel, initiated the "disproportionate" response in this affair. The U.S.-Israeli stooge Saakashvili should be brought before a Russian "Nuremberg"-style court and dispensed with, accordingly." Posted by Gerry August 11, 08
"WAR is always the worse solution, that is the only truth. NOW , in 2008, we know that most of information is disinformation to lead us in a war. As a citizen of a NATO country I too don't like to be a member of a "military alliance". I rather prefer to be an activist against war and stress that we all live in the same planet and must try to live in peace. Shame on all those politics that lead us to war !" "I amuse myself at you, ladies and gentlemen, and especially the ones claiming Russia to have plans on restoring the Union or South Ossetia to be nothing. Just so that you know, Ossetians are a completely separate from Georgians nationality. They joined Russian Empire as a separate state and then joined USSR again as a separate state back in 1917. This is purely by Stalin's (who was Georgian himself) will alone that they were joined with Georgian Socialist Republic and were governed by Georgians for some 75 years.
When USSR collapsed Ossetia just wanted to be independent, and Georgia acted with brutal force, killing thousands of Ossetians, which resulted in a war in 1991-92, when Ossetia was able to become de-facto independent. This is not and never was an inter-Georgian separatist movement, and after being genocided by Georgians it's no wonder Ossetians don't want to live in the same state with them any more.
What's more, in 1994 Russia signed a treaty making it help whichever of the countries of the region gets attacked. That's what it does - honored it's UN sanctioned treaties. That's why Western officials now claim "disproportional use of force" - they have nothing better to claim, as Russia is acting perfectly correct.
Look what did Georgia start the war with - with bombarding a peaceful city with multiple rocket launchers and heavy artillery, killing a thousand of civilians. How can you say anything about it, when your compatriots slaughter innocent people just for being Ossetians? Didn't you have enough of blood under Gamsahurdia, who openly claimed "Georgia for Georgians"? What kind of a blood-thirsty monster are you, then?
Claiming that Russia is to reestablish the Union is just funny - who'd want to join? Don't forget to ask Saakashvili "Why did he KILLED 2000 sleeping men at night bombardment ?" Posted by danvolodar August 11, 08
"Questions to those who still think that Saakashvili is a sane person: what possibly could have been justification for his order to level the city of Tskhinvali and the civilians living there with Katyusha rockets??????????? He is insane and he is a coward! His insanity has brought unbelievable suffering to all the people in that region." Posted by Luka August 11, 08
"It is amazing how can great photography, presenting both warring sides, unite different people and instigate anti-war feelings. None of the print stories have done it and rather provoked angry judgments from both pro-Russian and anti-Russian audience. The first casualty at war is considered to be truth - but the revealing photos can powerfully present this truth, showing that the main casualties at war are people. I wish more print and online journalism was concentrated on presenting the anti-human side of wars rather than what officials are saying on both sides. They are both lying" Posted by yevgenia August 11, 08

Russia was acting according to the peace-keeping treaties it has signed, honoring its UN mandates. This is not a Russian military aggression of any kind. Georgians have slaughtered Ossetians more than enough, twice in the 20th century already: during the Russian Civil War and when USSR collapsed; and then they started it all anew. How much blood of the civilians do they need not to write lies under the photographs, like the one with Grad multiple rocket launching systems bombarding peaceful Tshinvali, destroying the living quarters and the hospital when in reality the city was shelled by the Georgian armed forces?
There is GOD, but GOD didn't order us to kill each other, GOD ordered us to live peacefully and build the earth, not destroy it. One day will come when we all stand in front of GOD and be asked on what we have done with our life and those people who killed others won't have anything to say. Politicians never pay the price of war. Perhaps if they had to, they wouldn't be so willing to sacrifice the lives of innocent people. Money is the worst religion. All those people were dying just because of money and politics.
USA gave Georgia newest war equipment which in the result of the war fall into the hands of Russians when Georgian soldiers retreated in panic from the partly captured by them territory leaving the newest equipment in the fields. Russian forces seized U.S. military equipment during the fighting in Georgia in addition to five vehicles Humvees. The Russian newspaper Izvestia reported that the captured equipment included Global Positioning System equipment used in weapons targeting, identification, friend-or-foe electronic gear and classified radio and reconnaissance equipment. The equipment and Humvees were sent previously to Georgia as part of a month long military-training exercise with U.S. and Georgian forces. The exercise involved about 1,000 U.S. soldiers and 600 Georgian troops.
In Russia there is a military museum of trophy armored vehicles located near Moscow named "Cubinka".
http://www.kubinka.ru/newindex... It is in small town near to which division of the Moscow guards has stopped in 1941 German tanks. (40 km from Moscow). The captured American "Humvees" with Ukrainian tanks (from Georgian army, too) will take the worthy place near to German armored troops-carriers of the Second World War. Both Russian and American tourists (in Moscow) - may descend to look at the military vehicles displayed in the museum. As Russian proverb speaks: "When the head is lost, do not cry about hair".
